AMC to develop 14-screen theater at FlatIron Crossing

BROOMFIELD — American Multi-Cinema Inc. (AMC) will build a 14-screen megaplex theater on the site of FlatIron Crossing, a 1.5-million-square-foot shopping mall under construction at the 96th Street Interchange with U.S. 36.

AMC is the largest operating subsidiary of AMC Entertainment Inc. (AMEX, AEN).

The new Broomfield theater will be the first with stadium seating to be part of a mall in Colorado, according to Adam Eichberg, spokesman for the mall developer, Phoenix-based Westcor Partners.

The AMC FlatIron Crossing 14, to be larger than mall anchors Foley’s, Nordstrom, Dillard’s and Lord & Taylor at about 60,000 square feet, will cap the far end of the “Village Shops” of FlatIron Crossing — a row of free-standing buildings stretching south from the enclosed mall. (A site plan is online at www.westcor.com).

Wally Chester, Westcor executive vice president, said a theater has been planned for FlatIron Crossing since the onset.

“This is an integral part of our village concept that’s going to provide entertainment and an experience that’s different from any enclosed mall,” Chester said.

Last July David Scholl, senior vice president of Westcor, said the developer hoped to lure Sundance Theaters, part of Robert Redford’s business group that operates the Sundance Film Festival, to the Broomfield project.

That didn’t happen because Sundance will focus on urban projects, Chester said.

“We may have done better,” he said of the AMC deal.
