Realtors’ endowment helps at-risk students

Since 1996, the Boulder Area Board of Realtors (BABR), through its ABC’S Foundation, has provided funding for the Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools’ (FBVS) Students at Risk program.

Founded in 1983, the mission of the private non-profit Foundation is to enhance and enrich the educational experiences of students in the Boulder Valley School District. The Foundation’s Students at Risk program awards funds to teachers to help respond to the critical needs of students dropping out of school.

The ABC’S Foundation was founded in 1993 to support student at-risk programming in the Boulder Valley School District. As an industry association representing Realtors in the Boulder Valley, BABR understands the importance of education to sustain the quality of life that the Boulder Valley cherishes. As such, BABR has partnered with FBVS to address the issues affecting students at risk. This partnership is an example of the for-profit world teaming with the non-profit world to work together to improve the community. Since its founding, the ABC’S has raised an endowment of $150,000.

Through generous annual gifts from the ABC’S, FBVS has been able to provide programs such as one-on-one time to help struggling elementary students learn to read — a proven method for lifting youngsters from the statistically at-risk to Assist Ask category and for keeping kids in school. A program funded this past year by the FBVS’s Students at Risk program prepares Hispanic students to take college entrance exams and to pursue post-secondary education. This year, 12 Hispanic students from Boulder High School will continue their education after graduating, compared to just two last year.

To ensure that funds are available in the future for at-risk programming, the ABC’S recently gave the Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools its endowment of $130,000 to establish the Boulder Area Board of Realtors Endowment with the FBVS. This endowment will generate income to annually fund at-risk programs. Irene Shaffer, ABC’S president, stated: “Boulder area Realtors are committed to making a difference through programs that help students to stay in school. We have been delighted to link up with the Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools to reach our mutual goals. This gift to the Foundation is a testament to the important work the FBVS does everyday. The staff and board of the FBVS make our community a better place for all students. The Boulder Area Board of Realtors challenges other organizations and individuals to provide funds to match this gift to the Foundation.”

By joining forces, the ABC’S and the FBVS have become a stronger organization to provide services and support for at-risk youth. Instead of competing for donors, the two foundations have partnered to make it easier and more logical for donors to help at-risk youth to succeed in the Boulder Valley School District. The BABR will continue to support the Foundation with a yearly gift to the Students at Risk program. They have already made a gift of $10,000 to support grants during the 1999-2000 school year.

The Foundation for Boulder Valley Schools distributes grants and awards to teachers throughout the school district including the communities of Boulder, Broomfield, Gold Hill, Jamestown, Lafayette, Louisville, Nederland and Superior. Over the past 16 years, the Foundation has awarded close to $750,000 benefiting 200,000 students. The Foundation awards grants through the Classroom Mini-Grant program, the Students at Risk program and the Tech 21 program. The Foundation also honors five individuals annually with the Impact on Learning Awards.
