NCAR’s new supercomputer has more to do than play chess

BOULDER — Move over Cray, there’s a new supercomputer in town.

Nicknamed “Black Forest” by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, who bought the new RS/6000 SP system from IBM for $6.2 million, the supercomputer will be put to work to help researchers simulate global climate patterns and determine the human impact on them.

Officials, who unveiled the new system in August, say you probably don’t want to challenge the computer to a game of chess.

With 160 dual processor nodes, 160 gigabytes of memory and 2.5 terabytes of disk space, IBM says the computer already is five times larger and 20 times more powerful than the Deep Blue computer that beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997.

NCAR will begin phasing out its Cray C-90, its present supercomputer.

Both Al Kellie, director of NCAR’s computing division, and Richard Anthes, president of the University Corp. for Atmospheric Research, were on hand to talk about their new purchase.

Kellie says the system gives NCAR computing capacity comparable to any environmental center in the world.

Scientists will be studying effects of industrial pollutants, including greenhouse gases and other airborne chemicals, on Earth’s climate. Other research will include areas such as droughts, ozone depletion, long-range weather prediction and other global climate changes.
