MentorNet gives contracts to women engineering students

BOULDER – This fall the University of Colorado will be offering women with an interest in pursuing careers in engineering and the sciences with the opportunity to establish an expansive network of potential career contacts.

Through a joint collaboration between CU-Boulder’s Women in Engineering Program, part of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and MentorNet, a non-profit program that matches students with mentors in their field of study, female engineering students will have the opportunity to increase their range of contacts and possibly career options after graduation.

Participants in MentorNet’s electronic mentoring service are linked to a volunteer mentor already working in the industry through e-mail. Last year the WIEP linked 18 students with CU alumnae mentors, by participating in MentorNet, the WEIP is hopeful those links will increase.

Last year MentorNet linked more than 500 female engineering and science majors from 26 universities with volunteer mentors. In the next few years that number is expected to increase to several thousand. Founded in 1998, the service, part of a non-profit program, is believed to be the first of its kind to be offered nationwide. In addition to mentoring opportunities, support services are provided on the program’s Web site, located at www.mentornet.net.
