Japan’s digital cash technology opportunity for new Web site

BOULDER-Using Internet technology, Unkai.com Inc. has cracked yet another market in the expanding online business world.

Unkai.com, a Boulder-based Internet company, has launched a new e-commerce Web site, www.rockiesavenue.com. The site will allow local businesses in Boulder to sell products in Japan using Japan’s NTT, Nipon Telegraph and Telephone, Internet cash technology.

Internet cash is digital money, and the dual yen/dollar use of digital cash e-commerce is a world first.

“This is the first time we’re using digital cash across two different countries, with two different currencies,´ said Kei Izawa, founder of Unkai.com.

Unkai.com signed an agreement with Japan’s Cyber Business Association, which has pioneered the use of Internet cash since 1998 in the form of digital smart cards. They look like credit cards but work like real currency.

So far, seven supply partners have signed on to the business opportunity, selling anything from aromatherapy products to mountain bikes to T-shirts. The site is diverse and advertises “American Brands at American Prices.”

Izawa said that the companies pay nothing to sell their products on the site, making the investment extremely low cost and low risk. He added that the use of digital cash will make purchasing easier and faster.

“We plan to sell strictly in Japan at first,” Izawa said. “In the future we may move to other countries.”
