Woodward Governor Co. wins GM contract

FORT COLLINS — Woodward Governor Co.’s industrial controls group won a contract from General Motors Corps., Electro-Motive Division. Under the contract, Woodward will supply PG Rail governors for 1,000 Union Pacific locomotives to be built by EMD.

The contract marks a milestone for all companies involved. It is the largest contract for rail governors that Woodward has received in its 129-year history. GM’s Electro-Motive Division and Union Pacific also stated the contract is their biggest order ever.

For Woodward, the total contract value will exceed $4 million over the life of the program.

The 4,000 horsepower SD70 locomotives will be manufactured in London, Ontario, Canada and will replace up to 1,500 older, less fuel efficient and less powerful units.

Union Pacific has agreed to lease the new locomotives for three to four years.
