Exabyte releases long-awaited Mammoth-2 tape drive

BOULDER — Exabyte Corp. (Nasdaq:EXBT), the Boulder-based tape and network storage solutions provider, has released its Mammoth-2 tape drive, which has transfer rates of 12 megabytes per second and storage capacity of 60 gigabytes per cartridge.

The Mammoth-2 (M2) includes a built-in cleaning tape, which prompts the system to automatically clean itself, reducing system down time and increasing head life. The system, which is compatible with most software applications and operating platforms, including NT, UNIX, NetWare and Linux, can back up 43 GB in less than an hour.

Other features include an 32 MB adaptive data buffer, which allows M2 to scale its speed to match that of the host server; backward compatibility, which upgrades data from previous MammothTape technology products; and advanced device monitoring and error recovery.

Industry analyst Bob Abraham, president of the Ojai, Calif.-based Freeman Reports, says Exabyte is “well positioned” to capitalize on evolving storage opportunities because of increasing volumes of data from applications such as the Internet and data warehousing.

Exabyte is offering a 30-day, no-risk M2 evaluation program, called the M2 Test Drive, allowing qualified data storage customers to test the product on-site. Also included is a three-year warranty.
