Coach Prime declares himself ‘cancer-free’

BOULDER — University of Colorado football coach Deion Sanders said he considers himself “cancer-free,” a year after undergoing surgery to remove his cancerous bladder.

Sanders told the Associated Press that a robotic surgical system — the Intuitive Da Vinci System, used to remove his bladder and reconstruct it using part of his intestine — expedited his recovery.

A routine checkup last spring detected a malignant tumor on Sanders’ bladder. The subsequent surgery and recovery caused him to miss football camps last summer.

“If I pull my shirt up, I’m not scarred, it’s not flawed. I’m not embarrassed by anything that transpired. I’m elated by everything that transpired,” Sanders told the AP.
